Politicking is the actions of using power and information to move resources towards preferred outcomes for your fellow colleagues and/or the organization s interests. Politicking is used to influence people and affect decisions. Locus of control is related to a person s belief on how much influence they think they have over external events and outcomes. The higher someone s locus of control is, the more politicking they participate in because they believe that the more engaged, assertive, and friendly they are to those they interact with, the more control they will have on final decisions. The three dimensions that should be considered before engaging in politicking are: Analyzing and knowing your own strengths and weaknesses; Reading and understanding others verbal and nonverbal language; and Assessing accurately the organization and its goals. Intentional understanding of these areas will help you develop a politicking strategy to empower yourself, your coworkers, benefiting the bottom line while accomplishing important organizational goals. Having a clearer understanding of what politicking is and how individuals utilize these strengths can definitely help me understand how to use politicking to my advantage in future business interactions.
